What the First Five Years Taught Us

Five years ago, we started MAREN Construction with a clear mission and a genuine belief that construction could be done differently. We are proud of what we've built, still learning every day, and nowhere near done.

Here are five lessons the first five years taught us:

Lesson 01: Projects rarely start when they're supposed to.
Most RFPs come with an anticipated start date. And while we try to help steer it as much as possible, almost none of them seem to hit it. Permitting, design, funding, something always moves the target. We learned early that flexibility isn't optional. Keep a smart mix of work, run the what-if scenarios, stay creative with your team, and be ready to go when the client actually needs you. Getting frustrated about it is a waste of energy.

Lesson 02: Atlanta is a big city. It's also a small town.
With over 30 years of relationships built in this market, the connections we made long before MAREN continue to pay dividends today. And that goes beyond clients. Our trade partners are a core reason we're successful. The best ones in Atlanta have options and they're choosy about who they work with. Earn that trust and protect it. This City has a long memory in both directions. Help people, stay consistent, never burn a bridge. It always comes back around.

Lesson 03: Building the foundation is the hard part.
Anybody can chase revenue without regard for culture, people, or long-term fit. That's the easy path. What's hard is building a culture people want to be part of, a reputation that precedes you, and a foundation strong enough to endure whatever the market throws at you. We play the infinite game. It has never been about short-term gains. It's about building a company, a reputation, and relationships that last.

Lesson 04: The team is everything.
Finding  people who genuinely enjoy working together doesn't happen by accident. It's something you intentionally build over time. We talk about our mission, vision, and core values constantly because the more clearly everyone understands where you're going, the more likely you are to get there. That clarity shapes how we operate every day, with each other, with trade partners, and with our clients.

Lesson 05: Be yourself. Especially if that's a little weird.
We've never tried to look like every other GC in Atlanta. We lean into what makes us different. For us, it’s the culture, the vibe, the way we treat people, the way we show up. Some get it immediately. Some don't. That's okay. The ones who do tend to become our best and longest relationships. To us, authenticity is the only way.

Five years doesn’t make you an expert, but it does give you perspective.

We’ve learned what matters, what doesn’t, and who we want to be in this industry. That clarity shapes how we take on the next five.
